1. Black Unity (37:21)

The feeling of togetherness, the feeling of oneness of all black people and oneness with the Creator has always been the theme in Pharoah Sanders music. "Black Unity" is his sincere and deeper feeling of the need for Black Unity in the world today. The message is "Black Unity Now."

Pharoah Sanders is a man of unique artistic and highly imaginative ideas, views and opinions, which are sometimes misunderstood by many. These of course are mainly expressed through his music. He always claimed that black music is the music of black folks and therefore is an impression and expression of their life. He has strongly objected to categorizing and labeling of black music, because after all music is universal and is without end. Music is a language we all use to comunicate with each other in sound, feelings, understanding, vibrations and otherwise -- thus music is a uniting factor.

The universality of black music has been depicted by his use of universal instruments -- African drums, shakers, bells, gongs, flutes, cow horns, cow bells, chains, thumb piano and cora; Japanese koto; Indian harmonica and sitar; Cuban drums and shakers; West Indians steel drums and the Western instruments. The rhythm and sounds improvised from all these instruments is Pharoah's own creation and concept of black music, which is excellent and as far as I am concerned is Pan-African in nature.

Black music is the life style of black people as expressed in sound rather than words. This album gives you a crossed-section of the ups and downs of our life. Listen well, and enjoy the music, you will get some insight into your life and a feeling of belonging -- Black Unity!
